A national food and drink retailer required 2 x 1,500kVA prime rated generators to replace old standby generators at two of their regional distribution centres within the UK. The generators were supplied with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to reduce Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions in order to comply with the Medium Combustion Plant Directive (MCPD) as the generators will be used to supply back to the grid when required. Along with the SCR systems, both generators were supplied with close fit enclosures and mains synchronising control capability. 

Prior to the delivery of the new generators, hire units were supplied to ensure a reliable solution was in place to avoid any potential risk in the event of power outage. Once the new generators were installed and commissioned on site, the hire generators were off-hired and returned back into Power Electrics extensive fleet.

The Challenge

In order for the customer to export power back to the grid, the new generators were required to comply with the MCPD, a European directive to limit emissions of certain pollutants into the air. Both generators were required to keep NOx below 190 mg/Nm3.



The Solution

By fitting SCR systems to both of the 1,500kVA generators, it ensure NOx emissions were brought below the 190 mg/Nm3 limit set by the MCPD. The SCR system reduces NOx to harmless nitrogen and water vapour.
