In this blog we are going to focus on how to reduce emissions from liquid fuel. What are the alternatives and how do these help reduce emissions?
Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) has been at the forefront of developing a clean-burning, environmentally friendly diesel alternative. Unlike regular biodiesel, hydrogren is used as a catalyst in the creation process instead of methanol.
It has been viewed that HVO biodiesel is a product of exceptional quality as the hydrogenation removes all oxygen from vegetable oils, helping it to avoid oxidation. Due to its numerous advantages over fossil diesel and regular boidiesel, HVO is gaining popularity with an increasing number of companies investing in the new technology.
One HVO product that is gaining popularity at an increasing speed is Green D+. Developed by Green Bio Fuels and distributed by Power Electrics, it is an environmentally sustainable fuel that cuts engine emissions and particulates by 94%. Find out more about Green D+
Already, one of Europe's largest truck manufacturers, DAF, have adopted the use of Green D+ in a large number of their fleet. Also, Red Funnel announced that they would be trailing the fuel on its ro-pax fleet ships which operate between Southampton and the Isle of Wight.
So it's clear that there is a demand and a market for Green D+, but how does the fuel actually help reduce emissions? Lets break than down:
Cetane Value (or Cetane number CN) - every fuel has a centane value which is representative of the time it takes for the fuel to ignite and the time between the first sign of ignition and the first rise in pressure during combustion. The higher the CN, the quicker the ignition and fewer exhaust emissions.
Red diesel has a CN of 45-48. Green D+ has a CN of 70+ and tests have demonstrated that Green D+ still achieved rapid start times in cold weather as well as considerable noise reduction.
Sulphur Content - much like a cetane value, every fuel also has a sulphur content recording. Sulphur dioxide, produced when fuels burn, is a catalytic poison and contributes to the degradation of an engine's emission control system. Sulphur content in red diesel is between 10-20ppm which is considered the average. Green D+ has a zero sulphur content rating, dramatically reducing the damage to an engine over time.
Storage - one problem that often arises with fuel is its deterioration over time and the unstable nature of the fuel if it is kept in storage for too long. Red diesel can typically be stored in a tank for 6 - 12 months before needing to add stabilising agents and chemicals to ensure the fuel is still safe to use. Also, if the temperature drops below -12, additives will need to be combined with red diesel so the quality doesn't deteriorate. Green D+ has an indefinite storage life and will never need the addition of stabilising agents to maintain its shelf-life or additives if the temperature drops below -12.
Aromatics - when burned, all fuels produce bi-products, most of which are not good for the engine. When diesel is burned within a combustion engine it produces carbon deposits that build up over time and damage the engine and fuel system. Green D+ produces zero carbon deposits inside the engine and even works to clean the engine as it is used.
