Power Electrics' Annual Sustainability Report

Sustainable Power Solution for Hospital Scanners

There is usually one critical factor when providing power to the Healthcare sector, it must be reliable and uninterrupted. When lives are at stake there can be no margin of error.

In this case study we explore how Power Electrics supplied Compleo Health, a healthcare solutions provider, with dependable temporary power for two new medical scanners whilst also reducing their environmental impact.

The Challenge:

Compleo Health was providing a hospital with a Computed Tomography (CT) scanner and a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner, both of which required dependable temporary power to keep them operational. Numerous factors had to be taken into account, including fluctuating power loads, redundancy solutions, and nearby residents.

Typically a 500kVA generator would be suggested, as it would cover peak power loads but would likely be under-utilised during quieter periods. Power Electrics suggested a more efficient and sustainable solution involving a Battery Energy Storage (BES) Unit for the duration of the project.

The Solution:

Instead of a 500kVA generator, Power Electrics’ Business Development Manager, Carl White, proposed a Hybrid setup including a 275kVA generator paired with a 318kVA/422kWh BES unit. This combination would handle the peaks in power load resulting from the imaging equipment running, whilst also being far more efficient when power requirements were low.

The BES unit reduced demand on the generator, resulting in lower fuel consumption, CO2 and NOx emissions, and noise being emitted. In fact, the BES unit runs silent so it could be programmed to handle overnight loads, making no noise between the hours of 8 pm to 9 am, benefiting the local houses which were only 25 metres away.

The BES unit does this by storing energy produced by the generator and releasing the power to supplement the generator when demand is increased or handle the load when less power is required.

It is not just about adopting greener technology but also about ensuring these advancements resonate with the values and requirements of the area we operate in.

The Results:

The result of utilising a hybrid power solution instead of a 500kVA generator on its own meant that over the month of November 2023 the site saved:

  • NOx: 151kg - 70% less
  • CO2: 32 tons - 70% less
  • Runtime: 612hrs - 88% less
  • Fuel: 9862L - 70% less

In addition to these environmental savings, the project was also more fiscally efficient for Compleo Health and the hospital, saving money on the hire of a larger generator and on fuel.

"Our collaboration with Power Electrics showcases our commitment to innovative healthcare solutions and understanding community needs. It is not just about adopting greener technology but also about ensuring these advancements resonate with the values and requirements of the area we operate in.

Through the hybrid power system, we are advancing sustainable healthcare and demonstrating our pledge to work with the community's environmental goals, achieving a synthesis of innovation and local sustainability efforts."
